Outing Report - Iowa Driftless trip in October
Recently, from October 17th to the 20th members of our Chapter embarked on our traditional fishing trip to Decorah, Iowa. A big part of the tradition is to stay at the Roundhouse Retreat in Decorah which is central to many of Iowa’s finest trout streams. Iowa is a “Out and Take” fishery but this group experienced several small trout being caught which suggests that Iowa has natural reproduction of Rainbows, Browns and Brookies. Due to Iowa’s stocking program and the ability for anglers to keep fish, the streams are popular, but there are plenty of places to fish and everyone met is friendly and happy to share the water and their insights.
Members of GBTU experienced good fishing during Iowa’s beautiful weather. The evenings were filled with great stories, laughter and great sunsets; one evening we were serenaded by Coyotes as we sat around the fire pit raising toasts to good fishing, great friends and a special toast for GBTU Members who recently passed. This year, in lieu of the traditional lasagna dinner, we held a pizza party on the last evening which allowed us all to stay on the water longer that day.
For those interested, the Chapter has reserved the Roundhouse for next October so please be sure to put those dates on your calendar. This year we had 10 anglers (8 men and 2 women) and the cost per night including breakfast food and the pizza party came out to $170 for the three nights and almost four days of fishing!
This would be half the cost for an overnight stay in any of the Decorah area hotels. It’s a great value and a memorable time!
